Central synapse and neuromuscular junction: same players, different roles.

چکیده
The central synapse in the brain and the neuromuscular synapse between motor neuron and muscle fiber are structurally and functionally distinct. Recent studies, however, have identified the localization and potential functions of signaling molecules common to both types of synapse. Strikingly, many of these molecules also have important roles in axon guidance and neurite outgrowth. Among these molecules are the cyclin-dependent kinase Cdk5, agrin, the agrin receptor MuSK, ephrin and the ephrin receptor Eph. Here we summarize the recent findings illustrating the diverse functions of these multi-talented molecules.

Glial imaging during synapse remodeling at the neuromuscular junction.
Glia are an indispensable structural and functional component of the synapse. They modulate synaptic transmission and also play important roles in synapse formation and maintenance. The vertebrate neuromuscular junction (NMJ) is a classic model synapse. Due to its large size, simplicity and accessibility, the NMJ has contributed greatly to our understanding of synapse development and organizati...
متن کاملNeuromuscular Junction Dismantling in Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis
Neuromuscular junction assembly and plasticity during embryonic, postnatal, and adult life are tightly regulated by the continuous cross-talk among motor nerve endings, muscle fibers, and glial cells. Altered communications among these components is thought to be responsible for the physiological age-related changes at this synapse and possibly for its destruction in pathological states. Neurom...
متن کاملExpression and alternative splicing of classical and nonclassical MHCI genes in the hippocampus and neuromuscular junction.
The major histocompatibility complex class I (MHCI) is a large gene family, with over 20 members in mouse. Some MHCIs are well-known for their critical roles in the immune response. Studies in mice which lack stable cell-surface expression of many MHCI proteins suggest that one or more MHCIs also play unexpected, essential roles in the establishment, function, and modification of neuronal synap...
متن کاملA synapse-specific carbohydrate at the neuromuscular junction: association with both acetylcholinesterase and a glycolipid.
With the aim of investigating the roles of carbohydrates in synapse formation, we have characterized a synapse-specific saccharide at the vertebrate neuromuscular junction. Two lectins of similar specificity (Dolichos biflorus agglutinin, DBA, and Vicia villosa-B4 agglutinin, VVA-B4) stain synaptic but not extrasynaptic regions of the rat muscle fiber surface and thus define a synapse-specific ...

ARTICLE HISTORY Received 19 July 2017 Revised 12 September 2017 Accepted 13 September 2017 ABSTRACT Bin-Amphiphysin-Rvs (BAR) domain containing proteins with their membrane deforming properties have emerged as key players in shaping up neuronal morphology and regulating cytoskeletal dynamics. However, the in vivo contexts in which BAR-domain proteins integrate membrane dynamics with cytoskeleta...
